OKAY. SO I know earlier yesterday I made this post [for even more pictures view that link] and at the time wasn’t able to say much about it. I found a few more things and wanted to just address those things here which I feel more closely represent the point I was trying to bring up.
It’s all in relation to why Kaworu is generally on the left side of imagery when he’s with Shinji (usually not always). And Shinji is on the right side. Lots of manga panels, merchandise/offical art and film scenes are set up like this as well. And by pointing this out I mean in relation to the viewer’s/outsider’s POV and how they are staged in manga panels and the anime to be viewed by the audience. Not necessarily whose side they’re standing on at any given time. I feel like it’s more than coincidence.
[the bath scene opens with Kaworu on the left and Shinji on the right]
From other brief sources I’ve pieced these things together:
[On some sites the “right” side was listed as relevant to the individual’s POV. In this case I feel it would still be relevant because I feel like these opposing sides are meant to be applied from the audience’s POV.]
Left Side [Kaworu]: “The less dominant or expressed side of yourself; passive or hidden parts of your nature / Your unconscious side - the internal world of feelings, memories, creativity, and values / Inward flowing; female energy.” [x]
"In our studies, we see the right side [left when viewed head-on] of the body as being symbolic of faith in Self, the Spiritual thought or considerations, the feminine aspect of self. It represents the future as well as our faith in our Self in relation to a situation." [x]
[in western culture] “… the left side has been associated with the moon, night, winter, the unconscious, death, and the underworld.” [x]
Right Side [Shinji]: “The dominant, confident, action-oriented side of yourself / Your conscious side - the external world of activity and environment; sanity; your ability to reason or think logically. Being conservative or acting in accordance with accepted standards.” [x]
"The left side [right when viewed head-on] deals with the Material considerations that you are going through. It reflects your past and how you draw on that past in dealing with the now. The left side represents the male aspect of the Self." [x]
"It is clear from several biblical verses that "right [hand]" was often a symbol for strength. The "right hand of God" was that which overcame Israel’s enemies"
"The right side of a man is the side on which God "marches" when assisting him in battle"
"[right side is seen as good luck/left as bad or an omen]" (I’m in no way trying to demonize Kaworu that’s the last thing I would do but his ending is always a negative one -sadly- and he brings Shinji much emotional suffering though they both love each other) [x]
"western culture equates the right with the sun, day, summer, consciousness, life heaven, and the masculine principal." [x]
I know not every aspect may be applicable but I can see the most general reoccurring themes being relatable, especially because so much in the show is drawn from western religious and cultural aspects as well. Shinji’s father wishes to become God, and Shinji is his right hand. Even though Asuka and Rei are powerful, Shinji is always the trump card and has been their last (and prevailing hope) multiple times against all odds. Though many at times call Shinji a ‘coward’ etc., he is still an action oriented character. It becomes his role and purpose even when he does not want it to be. He tries to find his purpose in the external world and his feelings are based on what is going on around him. He reasons his way into believing (for his sanity) that all of these things are things he has to do and the only way he will be loved. Shinji bases most of his actions and views on his past.
Kaworu on the other hand has an inner peace carried with him. External forces don’t dictate his every feeling and action, and he lives instead “inside-out” and bases decisions on his own free will. He represents the side of femininity. While his body is male, he still has very delicate features and a gentle countenance (he’s a nurturing figure, esp. in Shinji’s life, and most so in the anime). He’s very empathetic and protective of Shinji. (To me) He feels like a very genderless being in that he does not dictate any of his actions or behavior on the fact that he’s male, and the fact that he loves Shinji is a non-issue for him. He in fact embraces it. He is the unconscious side of feelings, creativity and internal strength, everything -its been said before I’m pretty sure- that Shinji wants to be, or at the very least admires and wishes to apply to his own person. i.e. The hidden parts of Shinji’s nature that he’s afraid to open up to others about.
Shinji greatly wants to be a part of Kaworu’s world, and he simply wants to “be” and exist with him. Kaworu is the ethereal side Shinji often looks at curiously and longingly but at times is also afraid to face, which can be applied to the inner sides of an individual. He is the honesty Shinji wants to open up to. A gentle and constant peace is what Kaworu offers, However Shinji is always forced in the end to decide between following his own ‘kaworu’ related side i.e. feminine/repressed/gentle/inner personal feelings, for the external dominant masculine ones. i.e. He’s always forced to destroy/snuff out that quieter part of himself in order to conform to what’s expected of him.
I can’t at the moment quote myself on any scholarly level of course, but I find these points very exciting, interesting and relative to the series. I realize there could always be information to counter this or that varies depending on the culture or source.
Extra: I also briefly noticed just while looking for example images that when Kaworu appears with Rei in the first Evangelion movie there are several cases he’s specifically on the right and she is on the left. I don’t want to jump to things but this definitely follows along with the feminine/masculine side I brought up of this whole thing as well.
